Juneau is located at the northern end of the Alaska "panhandle", about 800 km eastsoutheast of Anchorage Alaska. More importantly, there are no direct road links to Juneau. Thus, there are two ways to get to Juneau in the summer: by air to Juneau's international airport, or by water, typically using the Alaska Marine Highway (state ferry) system.

Flying to the conference The organizers strongly encourage LFQIS-4 participants to fly to and from Juneau Alaska (JNU). Flights can come directly from Seattle, or via Anchorage (if you want to visit other areas of the state while here.) Vehicles can be rented at the Juneau airport; however, the city is small enough for walking and the organizers will arrange group transportation for all activities.

Driving to the conference The Alaska Marine Highway system is the only way to bring a car to Juneau; most travellers who choose this mode start at Seattle. While extremely scenic, it is not cheap in either time or money, and travellers will pay a higher fare for a cabin during the multi-day voyage from Seattle to Juneau. Please contact the local organizing committee if you are considering driving to the meeting. (A reasonably priced travel option is to fly or drive to Seattle and to take the ferry to Juneau, travelling as a walk-on passenger. Many visitors camp out on the deck in a tent, and the ferry does have some food service. Please be aware that due to the need to accommodate tides, the round-trip can take almost a week.)
